Comic Con 2013 Hotels: An Alternative To Consider

Mar 12th, 2013 Featured, On Pop culture, On Travel incoherentboy 6 min read

As of 10am Pacific Time, the second Comic Con International hotel lottery has closed, and choices for Comic Con 2013 hotels have gotten that much fewer. So allow me to tell you about the place I’m staying this year, one you may also want to consider. It’s the same place I stayed during last year’s San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC) : the quaint, lovely Keating House Bed and Breakfast on Banker’s Hill.

SDCC Accommodation: There Is Still Hope

Mar 2nd, 2013 Featured, On Pop culture, On Travel incoherentboy 9 min read

So you’ve gone for the San Diego Comic Convention hotel lottery, and didn’t luck out at all. A hotel within walking distance of the convention centre is out of the question, and would probably cost you an Infinity Gem anyway, or maybe a pair of Nega Bands. To think the fight for SDCC badges was already bad enough. So what do you do for SDCC accommodation now?

What We Did With Our SDCC Swag Bags

Sep 22nd, 2012 Featured, On Pop culture incoherentboy 7 min read

It must be a perennial problem after each San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC): what should you do with your swag bags? To explain a little: these oversized bags, made of what must be polystyrene and/or PVC, are given out at SDCC every year. Some are given out by the organisers, while others can be picked up at different booths at the convention, depending on your luck. This year, each visitor was given a waist-high swag bag in a variety of designs. I landed a bag with a Man Of Steel design, the Superman reboot starring the soon-to-be globally famous Henry Cavill.

STGCC panel: Heroes And Villains

Sep 4th, 2012 Featured, On Pop culture incoherentboy 6 min read

Andy Diggle, Mark Brooks, Andie Tong, Leinil Yu, Gerry Alanguilan and Mark Torres: these were the creators who sat on an STGCC mega-panel called Heroes and Villains, which I moderated on Sunday. It brought together some of the biggest names at the Singapore Toy Game and Comic Convention to talk about how heroes and villains have evolved over the years.

STGCC: Spotlight On Andy Diggle

Sep 3rd, 2012 Featured, On Pop culture incoherentboy 7 min read

So are the rumours true: is leading British comic writer Andy Diggle taking over as writer of the Action Comics monthly series? And what does he think of the upcoming Dredd movie reboot, a character he worked on extensively during his tenure at British cult magazine 2000 AD? These were just some of the questions addressed at Spotlight On Andy Diggle, an hour-long panel on Saturday that I moderated at last weekend’s Singapore Toy Game and Comic Convention (STGCC).

STGCC Epilogue – In Pictures

Sep 3rd, 2012 Featured, On Pop culture incoherentboy 7 min read

So the Singapore Toy Game and Comic Convention (STGCC) is over. That can only mean one thing: it’s time to ogle the convention all over again in pictures. I didn’t take very many photos, and I’ve realised that it’s time to get a cam that performs better indoors, but here are some of the highlights of my STGCC experience.

STGCC: Swag Time, Geeks!

Aug 31st, 2012 Featured, On Pop culture incoherentboy 4 min read

As mentioned in my earlier post, I’ll be moderating two panels at the Singapore Toy Game and Comic Convention this weekend (Sept 1-2) at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre (Hall B and C). But besides that, I’ll also be stalking the convention floor, tweeting away and oh yes, giving away lots of FREEBIES.

Singapore Toy Game And Comic Convention 2012: Comic Panels To Watch

Aug 26th, 2012 Featured, On Pop culture incoherentboy 5 min read

So the annual Singapore Toy Game and Comic Convention (STGCC) takes place this weekend (Sept 1-2), and the excitement is mounting among fanboys. If you’re reading this and you’re not a Singaporean geek, STGCC is basically our version of the San Diego Comic Con, albeit on a much smaller scale. Last year’s convention drew around 30,000 people to Suntec. But since the mall is undergoing an overhaul,…

SDCC: Epilogue – My top five moments

Jul 19th, 2012 Featured, On Pop culture, On Travel incoherentboy 13 min read

Almost five days after it ended, my head is still filled with strange, surreal thoughts about SDCC. Was I really there? Did I really see/do all those awesome things? And why do I still wake up at 2am thinking that it’s time to go and queue for a panel? But the San Diego Comic Convention has come and gone, and it’ll be a whole year before SDCC 2013 comes. In the meantime, I’ll have these memories to keep from crying myself to sleep at night.
